Proposals for a new village in Skye have received initial local authority backing, which could provide a welcome boost for local construction recruitment.
Members of Highlands Council unanimously agreed to grant outline planning permission to Clan Donald Lands Trust's application to undertake construction work on the new development at the 40-acre Kilbeg site in the south of the island.
If the proposals receive full planning permission, 93 homes will be erected on the site over the next 20 years, along with new facilities and accommodation for Sabhal Mor Ostaig Gaelic college, a shop, sporting facilities, a conference centre and a care home.
Clan Donald trust chairman Sir Ian Macdonald stated that "the village will be a 21st-century dynamic hub offering first-class education facilities, modern enterprise units, state-of-the-art capabilities for ICT and digital media, with environmentally-sustainable, quality housing."
Earlier this month, Marine Current Turbines secured a site in the Kyle Rhea strait off the coast of Skye for the development of a new £40 million tidal farm, which could also help to create new construction jobs in the area.
