A new development is set to get underway in Dorchester, with positive repercussions for construction recruitment in the town.

Construction work will start next month on the £60 million Charles Street project, which will comprise 20 shops, including a new Waitrose store, flats, a hotel and an underground car park and is set to generate up to 100 new construction jobs, many of which will go to local residents.

Furthermore, Balfour Beatty subsidiary Cowlin has been awarded a £10.4 million contract to deliver new premises for West Dorset District Council on the site, comprising new offices, a library and an adult learning centre.

Neil Sherreard, the firm's divisional managing director, remarked: "Cowlin has a proud track record of delivering schemes of this nature and we look forward to completing a development that the people of Dorchester will benefit from for years to come."

Planning permission was awarded to this project back in September; construction work on its second phase, which will be tendered separately, is scheduled to start next year.
