A number of new construction jobs in Cambridgeshire could be created by Skanska, after the company revealed that it has been selected to build a new complex for the Royal Air Force (RAF).
The building firm will design and construct a £150 million facility at RAF Wyton, including squadron blocks for the 42nd Engineer Regiment and support buildings.
Skanska was awarded the contract by the Ministry of Defence, which is commissioning the project as part of its defence intelligence modernisation programme.
Construction will begin this summer and is expected to be completed by the end of 2011, the company confirmed.
It will be responsible for the architectural, structural and civil design of the facility, as well as the mechanical and electrical requirements of the new buildings.
"Today's announcement is great news," said Mike Putnum, executive vice president of Skanska. "We are delighted to be partnering with Defence Estates for the delivery of this important strategic asset."
Recently, the Construction Products Association suggested that people in the industry are at an advantage during the economic downturn because they possess a range of transferable skills.
