New construction jobs could be created during the development of a major offshore windfarm off the coast of north Norfolk.
Wood Group Engineering revealed yesterday (June 2nd) that it had secured the design and project management contract from AREVA Transmission and Distribution for the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Windfarm.
The facility will consist of 88 turbines and have an energy capacity of 315 megawatts, which is enough to power approximately 220,000 homes.
It will be developed by Scira Offshore Energy, which is owned by Norwegian firms StatoilHydro and Statkraft.
Les Thomas, Wood Group's director for production facilities, said the company is "well placed" to use its technical knowledge on offshore windfarm developments.
"Wood Group's move into the renewable energy sector is a natural progression from the services it provides to the oil and gas and power sector," he commented.
Two offshore substations will capture energy generated by the windfarm before it is transported back to shore.
Wood Group currently employs more than 28,000 people across the world.
