Australian construction jobs being created thanks to public sector contracts

Government work is continuing to create much-needed construction jobs in Australia, it has been reported.
Many of the country's large construction firms, in addition to smaller subcontractors, have benefited from public sector contracts amid falling output in the private sector.
Tony Costantino, chief executive of Bovis Lend Lease, said that government construction work has prevented a number of companies from going bust.
"It has been a godsend for some of those people. For a lot of them, it's the difference between their business staying afloat and not," he said.
Since concentrating on the health sector in 2004, Bovis Lend Lease has created $3 billion (£1.46 billion) worth of hospital construction jobs in Australia.
One of the company's most notable developments was winning $700 million (£341 million) of construction work in April as part of the government's Building the Education Revolution school initiative.
Bovis Lend Lease operated in more than 30 countries and employs in the region of 8,500 people.
