Approximately 220 new construction jobs are being created at the Williamstown shipyard in Australia.

This is after BAE Systems secured a multi-million dollar contract from the Royal Australian Navy to deliver new Ai Warfare Destroyers.

The deal, worth a total of $450 million (£219 million), will be shared with the FORGACS group, which is based in Newcastle.

According to the Herald Sun, premier John Brumby said the number of people in construction jobs at the shipyard would increase from 178 to 400.

Construction work is expected to begin later this year on the contract, which is part of the $8 billion (£3.9 billion) Air Warfare Destroyer initiative.

It is expected that the project will draw to a close in 2011.

BAE Systems is the largest defence company in Australia. Its headquarters are in Edinburgh Parks and the company employs approximately 6,500 people.

As well as sea-based projects, the company specialises in engineering and systems integration in the air and on land.
