New construction jobs could be created in Hong Kong after Gammon Construction secured a £120 million contract from Hysan Development Company.

Balfour Beatty's south-east Asian joint venture company will be responsible for the redevelopment of the Hennessy Centre in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay district.

It is expected that construction work on the 36-storey retail and office development will be completed in 2011.

Among its planned features are a four-level car-park and retail basement.

Balfour Beatty chief executive Ian Tyler said the company was "delighted" to have been chosen for the project.

"Gammon's advanced technological standards and expertise in building construction are key factors in the contract award," he commented.

The development is expected to set an example in terms of environmentally-friendly building within the community.

Balfour Beatty announced in May that it had secured £373 million worth of new contracts in the US, with major construction work projects due to be undertaken in Dallas and Kansas.
