Interserve has won a £44 million contract under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme to build two leisure centres in Leeds.

As the first ever non-education private finance initiative project in the BSF initiative, the construction group will build and manage new facilities in Morley and Armley for Leeds city council

The Morley leisure centre will be built in the same location as the current venue, while the Armley project will take place adjacent to the present site, with construction work expected to begin immediately.

With the two facilities scheduled to open in the summer of 2010, Interserve will supply operational services for the following 25 years.

Adrian Ringrose, chief executive of the firm, commented: "It is further proof of how the positive attitude of all the parties involved is proving highly beneficial, enabling us to make great progress in delivering new facilities to the people of Leeds."

Earlier this month, a consortium of Interserve and John Laing was awarded £310 million worth of construction work by the Ministry of Defence to build and manage an office and accommodation block in Wiltshire.
