Leading UK construction company Carillion has announced that it has finished the final stage of the Leeds Inner Ring Road project.
The scheme, which was valued at £50 million, created a number of civil engineering jobs before it was opened by secretary of state for transport Geoff Hoon.
The new road will link with junction four of the M621, allowing motorists to avoid Leeds city centre. It will speed up travel times across the city, while relieving congestion in the Hunslet and Holbeck areas.
Commenting on completion of the project, Andy Brown, Carillion's contracts director, said that the company was proud to have been principal contractor on the scheme.
"It is no coincidence that a working relationship such as this is associated with a scheme that finishes on time, within budget, with no serious injuries and to a quality that everybody can be proud of," he said.
During his visit, Mr Hoon also visited the site of the East Leeds Link Road, which will connect the city centre with the new junction 45 of the M1.
Carillion employs around 50,000 people worldwide and undertakes projects in Britain, Europe, Canada, the Middle East, North Africa and the Caribbean.
