Prince Charles' proposed eco-town development in Devon has been given the go-ahead, it has been reported.

Sherford new town, which is billed as Britain's greenest town, will be constructed on farmland near Plymouth, according to ContractJournal.

The development, which will be complete by 2020, is to house 12,000 people, with at least half of the town's power needs being fulfilled by renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar panels.

In addition to over 4,000 houses, the project will also see the construction of commercial and retail properties, three primary schools, one secondary school and recreation facilities, such as tennis and netball courts and football and cricket pitches.

Conceived by the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment, Sherford is backed by a private consortium which includes firms such as property developer Red Tree and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Thisisplymouth.co.uk also reports that approximately 1,260 construction jobs will be created by the project, which is scheduled to start in 2010.
