Those in Olympic construction jobs have begun work on the White Water Canoe Centre in Broxbourne, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has confirmed.
The facility in Hertfordshire will accommodate the 2012 Olympics' canoe slalom events, while it will be converted into a sporting and leisure facility for canoeing and white-water rafting enthusiasts once the Games have drawn to a close.
ODA chairman John Armitt said that the start of construction work on the facility highlighted the fact that the organisation was realising its targets at venues away from the Olympic Park in east London.
"With the venue due for completion ahead of 2012, we will deliver an early legacy of first-class new sporting facilities allowing the huge benefits of the Games to be felt in Broxbourne and the east of England region well before the world's best athletes arrive in 2012," he commented.
Water will be circulated through the Olympic course by four separate pumps, each of which will weigh five tonnes.
Over 80 university students studying civil engineering and construction recently gained a week's worth of work experience at the Olympic Park site.
