A new scheme has been launched in schools across east London in a bid to inspire youngsters to consider civil engineering jobs.

The Stem Challenges, which kicked off at the Olympic Park in Stratford, is asking schoolchildren to think about what work is needed to bring the 2012 Games to life for an entire term.

Youngsters will be required to take part in ten different competitions as part of the scheme.

Jobs lined up for participating schools include finding a suitable location for the Olympics, analysing different building designs and conducting experiments.

Barking Abbey School teacher Alex Brooks said: "If our students weren't excited about taking part in the Stem Challenges before today they certainly are now.

"It's been great for them to see the impressive amount of work going on at the Olympic Park and really beneficial for them to make the connection between what's happening here and what they are learning about in class."

The initiative is being run by science network STEMNET along with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
