A multimillion-pound regeneration project has been approved in London which will boost construction jobs in the city.

Councillors in Barnet have given the green light to the £4.5 billion renovation that will see 7,500 new homes built at Brent Cross, Cricklewood.

The scheme is expected to create 27,000 new construction jobs in the region.

Barnet Council leader Mike Freer welcomed the move.

He said: "Over the next few years we look forward to working with our development partners to deliver good infrastructure, quality homes, a new town centre and a vibrant, sustainable community."

Permission was granted to Brookfield Europe, Hammerson and Standard Life Investments, who intend to revive the 250-acre site.

Proposals include a new town centre for north-west London, road improvements and a new train station.

Mr Freer added: "This is a once in a generation opportunity to secure significant investment in a part of our borough that needs a major boost. It will enable us to deliver our policy of creating successful suburbs, while at the same time safeguarding the environment."
