Construction work for the 2012 Olympics has passed its halfway mark, according to a new joint report by the government and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

It stated that development work remained on time and that construction jobs such as the erection of the Velodrome steel structure, the Aquatics Centre roof, three Olympic Village blocks and the Olympic Stadium's main body have all been completed in the past year.

It also forecast that the total cost of this construction work would be £7.262 million, which is 0.3 per cent above its previous estimate and reflects the huge investment in construction recruitment that the forthcoming Games in east London have generated.

ODA chairman John Armitt commented: "We are continuing to make strong progress across the project.

"There are however still big challenges ahead, as construction accelerates across the site and the workforce peaks. This will be our toughest year. We take nothing for granted but I am confident that the foundations for success are now in place."

Last month, the ODA reported that work on the two main Olympic sites in Stratford had created over 9,000 new jobs in construction, with over half of the 6,277 construction workers based on the Olympic Park site heralding from the capital.
