Tens of thousands of construction jobs will be created across Britain from next year, a new government programme has suggested.

Building Britain's Future, a policy document unveiled by prime minister Gordon Brown yesterday (June 30th), says that 45,000 construction jobs will be created in the delivery of thousands of new affordable homes.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Brown explained: "By building new and additional homes we can also now reform social housing allocation enabling local authorities to give more priority to local people whose names have been on waiting lists for far too long," the BBC reports.

According to the news provider, the government intends to treble investment in housing to £2.1 billion, which will go towards funding 110,000 new affordable properties.

In a potential construction work boost, Mr Brown added that, from January, those under the age of 25 who have been out of work for more than 12 months would receive a guaranteed job, a period of work experience or a training position.

The Construction Products Association said earlier this month that continued government was needed if the construction industry is to recover from the recession.
