Index bodes well for civil engineering recruitment

The availability of civil engineering jobs look set to grow after the number of projects in this sector grew rapidly last month, according to new figures.

Civil engineering projects increased by 17 per cent year-on-year in November, Glenigan's index showed, due to rapid growth in infrastructure work, while this does not even factor in projects worth over £100 million, such as the £6.3 billion widening of the M25.

Moreover, the index also showed a two per cent rise in residential project starts compared to November 2008, and as well as that the overall rate of decline in construction work starts has slowed substantially.

Glenigan's economics director, Allan Willen, remarked that "the increased flow of new private housing projects during the autumn reflects housebuilders' growing confidence that market conditions will improve during 2010".

These trends appear to also be having a positive impact on construction recruitment, with a recent report by REC and KPMG showing that temporary and permanent contract construction jobs also increased last month.
