A new centre is being established at the University of Cambridge that will prepare students for future civil engineering jobs.

The Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology is being funded by Laing O'Rourke, with the aim of providing engineering students with a practical education so as to prepare them for jobs in construction.

A new two-year part-time master's degree in Construction Engineering will be launched at the centre next September, while undergraduate degrees, PhD and postdoctoral qualifications and executive education will also be provided.

Department of Engineering head Professor Dame Ann Dowling, stated: "I am excited by the potential of this new centre to develop novel solutions to the challenges of constructing a built environment that is sustainable whilst providing for the needs of society to supply energy, water, shelter, and a transport infrastructure on which economic well-being depends."

According to Glenigan's latest index, the value of new civil engineering jobs started in the UK during May was up by 11% on the same month of 2009.
