New construction jobs will be provided after separate contracts were awarded to Surgo and BAM Construction for £60 million worth of construction work at South Tyneside College.

According to reports, Newcastle-based Surgo has secured a £25 million deal to rebuild the Hebburn campus, while BAM has been awarded a £35 million deal to rebuild the college's Westoe campus.

Speaking to nebusiness.co.uk, Surgo director Jeff Alexander said that the new deal would guarantee job security for a number of its workers.

"We are currently involved on a number of large contracts in the education sector, and our experience in this line of work is one of the reasons why I think we have landed the job at South Tyneside College," he said.

The college will be demolished and rebuilt in a number of stages until its completion in 2012.

According to ContractJournal.com, Surgo beat off competition from rival construction firms Sir Robert McAlpine, Laing O'Rourke and Taylor Woodrow to land the deal.

The firm announced recently that it had put the finishing touches to a new £3.1 million primary school in Sunderland.
