Construction work is set to go ahead on a new community stadium in Salford after the local council agreed to help deliver this development.
Salford City Council has announced that it will form a joint venture company with Peel Holdings to build the £26 million, 15,000-seater stadium on a 70-acre site in Barton, which will be home to local rugby league side Salford Reds.
Detailed plans for the project will be announced in May, with the phased development of the site set to begin in October and expected to be finished by the end of next year, while offering a stimulus to local construction recruitment in the meantime.
Salford City Council leader John Merry remarked: "Sport is a big business these days and making suitable, state-of-the-art facilities available for a successful club will bring economic benefits to the city.
"Our plan is about supporting sport in Salford and I believe it is the right thing to do."
Sport-related developments such as this are helping to create new construction jobs across the UK, with 9,000 construction workers employed on the Olympic development in east London alone.
