New construction jobs could be created in Northern Ireland after plans were approved for a multi-million pound eco-village near Larne.

The development, which includes 450 environmentally-friendly homes, restaurants and retail outlets, will be built on the site of Magheramorne Quarry, which currently houses a derelict cement works.

In addition, the eco-village will feature a community centre, a hotel, a viewing tower for tourists and a number of other attractions, including a heritage railway and visitor centre.

Northern Ireland environment minister Sammy Wilson said that the development would "provide a boost" to the province's tourism industry.

"Two hundred years of quarrying and cement production has taken its toll on the landscape and I am delighted that this scheme will remove what has become a major eyesore from one of our valued scenic routes and rejuvenate the area," he commented.

The minister added that, as well drawing tourists to the area, the eco-village would create jobs once the construction work phase begins.

Situated in the vicinity of Larne Borough Council, the quarry is owned by Lafarge, which used to be known as Blue Circle.
