A number of construction jobs could be created in Northern Ireland if the government was prepared to provide more funding to infrastructure projects.

Construction chiefs in the province are worried about the falling number of government-financed infrastructure projects, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

Expressing its concern, Northern Ireland's Construction Industry Federation (CIF) is publishing a new document today (July 1st) which calls on the state to set aside more funding for capital projects.

It says that such a measure would create construction work opportunities on projects such as the development of new windfarms.

In May, the CIF called on the government to implement the infrastructure bond, which was initially recommended by the Construction Industry Council.

According to CIF director general Tom Parlon, such a measure would halt the decline in the Irish economy.

"The infrastructure bond is a ready made solution in terms of saving jobs and kick-starting economic activity," he commented.

"Our proposal would save 70,000 construction jobs, giving a massive boost to the economy."
