Siemens has awarded a contract for building two new offshore wind turbine substations to a firm in Northern Ireland, which will help to create civil engineering jobs there.
It has selected Belfast yard Harland & Wolff (H&W) to produce the platforms for its turbines, with construction work on these structures scheduled to start next year and finish in 2012.
These turbines will form part of the Gwynt y Mor wind farm, which will be located off the coast of north Wales and once completed in 2012 will provide enough electricity to power up to 400,000 households.
H&W chief executive officer Robert Cooper said the contract "clearly demonstrates our continuing development as part of the UK supply chain for marine renewable energy".
Siemens has previously used British yards for building its offshore turbine substations at Thanet, Greater Gabbard, London Array and Lincolnshire, with positive implications for UK civil engineering recruitment.
