Shetland gas plant gets go-ahead

A new gas processing plant is set to be built in the Shetland Isles, it has been announced.

The BP managed Sullom Voe Oil Terminal is located at the largest port in the Shetland Isles and handles the cargoes of ships working at more than 20 oilfields between Shetland and Norway.

The site also houses a gas processing plant but BP has now won approval to replace the 30 year old structure with a new smaller facility, with a slew of new jobs expected to be created during construction.

Local councillor Alastair Cooper told the Shetland News that the construction project "ensures the continuance of Sullom Voe for a number of years to come and it will make the place slightly more efficient".

The publication reports that the first stage of the scheme - nicknamed Project Aurora - will begin towards the end of this year, with construction set to kick into high gear in 2009.

It is thought that the new gas processing facility will be ready to enter service by August 2010.ADNFCR-1582-ID-18537331-ADNFCR
