A £30-million hotel redevelopment in Northern Ireland has been proposed by McAlister Holdings, it has been reported.

The firm has applied for planning permission for a project which will see the construction of a five-star hotel in Ballycastle, according to 4NI.co.uk.

Subject to approval, the project will rebuild the Marine hotel complex, to provide 200 rooms, conferencing areas, a restaurant and spa and leisure facilities.

The development will create around 125 construction jobs, with 225 hospitality vacancies when the hotel opens.

Mervyn McAlister, McAlister Holdings managing director, told the publication: "Once complete the new hotel will provide an enhanced facility and will attract and accommodate a high percentage of the yearly one million visitors to neighbouring attractions - the Giants Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge."

He also said that because the firm is locally based, he would like residents and business in the area to discuss the scheme and give feedback on the proposal.

Last month, the BBC reported plans for construction of an £18-million visitor centre at the Giant's Causeway have been submitted by the National Trust.
