SSE carbon capture plans could create civil engineering jobs

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has announced plans to develop a new carbon capture scheme in Aberdeenshire, which could aid civil engineering recruitment.

It has applied for both EU and Department of Energy and Climate Change funding for it to design and undertake construction work on a carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at its gas-fired power plant in Peterhead.

This facility will capture carbon dioxide emitted by one 385-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine unit at the plant, which will then be transported via St Fergus and then by an underground pipeline to an existing has reservoir in the North Sea.

Ian Marchant, chief executive of SSE, commented: "If long-term targets for reducing emissions are to be met, CCS technology must be applied as widely as possible."

SSE also recently revealed that it was exploring the possibility of installing a subsea cable linking Britain and Norway, which if it goes ahead, could also lead to the creation of new civil engineering jobs.
