New construction jobs are being created on a multi-million pound rail project in Scotland, it has been confirmed.
Network Rail and Carillion will be employing 16 new recruits on the £300 million Airdrie-Bathgate rail link, which is being funded by Transport Scotland.
The new workers will undergo a three-week training course ahead of construction work beginning next month.
Network Rail's Scotland route director Ron McAuley said that the 16 new recruits are "the tip of the iceberg" in terms of the benefits that the new railway will bring.
"Working on this project will open up new opportunities to the chosen candidates," he commented.
"Not only will they have a fantastic opportunity to help build a new railway, they will learn some valuable new skills along the way."
Mr McAuley added that each new employee will be selected from the local area and will come from the ranks of the long-term unemployed.
Network Rail recently welcomed North Lanarkshire Council's decision to give the go-ahead to a new railway station at Caldercruix.
