Thames Water to begin Swindon sewer works

Construction work will get underway this week on a project to protect an area of Swindon from sewer flooding, Thames Water has confirmed.

A total of 75 homes in the Haydon Wick area will be protected during the £10 million scheme, which is expected to be completed by March next year.

Bob Collington, Thames Water's wastewater director, said that Haydon Wick residents had been "badly affected" by sewer flooding in the past.

"Work will include redesigning the sewer network and installing new sewers in Haydon Wick," he said.

"This will increase the capacity of the foul and surface water sewers, enabling them to cope with increased rainwater run-off during heavy storms, which has resulted in sewage overflowing in to homes and streets in the past."

Thames Water recently undertook upgrade work at Haydon End sewage pumping station in order for the next phase of engineering works to begin.

The water company will be working alongside Swindon Borough Council for the duration of the project to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum.

Earlier this month Thames Water said that work to protect homes in Aylesbury from sewer flooding were "well underway".
