Construction work is set to begin next year on a new biomass-fired plant near Bristol, it has been confirmed.

Energy company E.ON has submitted plans for its 150 megawatt Portbury Dock Renewable Energy Plant, which would generate power for approximately 200,000 homes in the region.

As well as helping to sustain those in construction jobs, the facility will create 35 permanent positions once it becomes operational in 2014.

E.ON is hosting three exhibitions later this month in order to inform local residents of its plans.

Project developer Dr Nilton Chan said that the development would "underline" Bristol's status as "one of the country's leading green areas".

"It's through developments like this that we can help change the way that the UK generates electricity, reducing our carbon emissions and maintaining a secure and affordable energy supply for our customers," he commented.

E.ON , alongside Dong Energy and Masdar, recently pledged €2.2 billion to the London Array project, which looks set to be the world's largest offshore windfarm.
