The planned expansion of Swansea University is set to create as many as 11,000 engineering and construction jobs in Wales, it has been predicted.
Under recently-unveiled plans, the university intends to build a completely new campus in the Welsh city.
The new 100-acre site would boast state-of-the-art science and innovation facilities, as well as accommodation for thousands of students, with the development aimed at further attracting blue chip companies such as BP and Rolls Royce, to the city.
In addition, the ambitious project could see Swansea become the only university in the UK to boast its own pier, which could be used to offer unique student flats.
Swansea University vice-chancellor Professor Richard Davies explained: "We are confident that this development will deliver world-class education opportunities, new employment and prosperous high-tech companies; all contributing to the excellent quality of life and environment in South West Wales."
A final decision on the proposed project is expected to be made later this year, though the proposals have already been subjected to, and passed, a feasibility study.
Swansea, which is the third-largest university in Wales, currently has a student population of around 15,000, including 2,500 postgraduates.
