New construction jobs have been provided in the first phase of a £25 million eco-housing development in Birmingham, it has been revealed.
The first phase of the £25 million Shenley social housing project was completed this week, and promises to give homeowners lower energy bills through the innovative use of solar panels.
The scheme involves the construction of 175 new homes as part of the Bournville Village (BVT) trust scheme.
Commenting on the completion of the first phase, Hitesh Champaneri, from the BVT, said that the dual philosophies of quality and social responsibility were incorporated into the regeneration project.
"We used solar panels for the first time in the early 1980s and we are continuing our interest in this innovative technology," he said.
The construction work involves 56 bungalows and 42 flats and homes, with the project set for completion in summer 2010.
The BVT is one of the UK's largest housing trusts, having been founded in 1900 by chocolate manufacturer George Cadbury. The trust now looks after 8,000 mixed-tenure properties in Birmingham, Shropshire and the Midlands.
