Carillion civil engineers achieve construction work milestones

Those in Carillion civil engineering jobs have achieved two major milestones on the Rugby Western Relief Road project.

Engineers have lifted the 12 Parkfield Railway Bridge beams into position using an 800-tonne crane, while the deck pour to the River Avon Viaduct was also tackled.

Each of the beams weighed 50 tonnes each, with the construction work being carried out during a series of Saturday nights.

The deck pour was completed within a 12-hour period on May 21st, with the River Avon Viaduct being the longest structure on the project, spanning 120-metres and carrying the relief road over the River Avon and its floodplain.

Carillion Civil Engineering structures agent Ashley Brookes said the milestones "were safely achieved with minimal disruption to the public and the environment".

"This is testament to the diligent planning carried out by our structures team in collaboration with WCC [Warwickshire County Council], Network Rail and a number of external agencies."

Carillion IT Services was recently awarded a major contract to deliver a new structured cabling system at BAA's new Terminal 5C at Heathrow Airport.
